Durham University Library is currently advertising the following vacancy.
Temporary Search Room Assistant
University Library Ref: 3204
Salary: £14,867 - £16,547 per annum
Grade: Grade 3
Contract: Fixed-term, Full-time
Hours: 35 hours per week
This post supports access to important research collections and offers practical experience of archives work appropriate for a graduate hoping to do a postgraduate archives course. Duties include assisting with search room invigilation, retrieval of material for readers, answering enquiries, shelving, listing and numbering of documents. A good general education (minimum 2 A levels or equivalent), an interest in history, and good IT skills are required. A degree, and some knowledge of languages, especially Latin, will be strong advantages. This post is a fixed term appointment for one year.
The post is subject to standard probationary terms. Further information will be issued in the contract of employment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Assistance with search room invigilation
* Retrieval and shelving books and documents for readers
* Registering new readers and explaining procedures and facilities
* Answering straightforward enquiries
* Assembling statistical information on use of the collections
* Carrying out reprographic orders
* Assistance with the preparation of online catalogues (listing, numbering and labelling of unique historical documents by hand)
