AHRC COLLABORATIVE DOCTORAL AWARD
Displaying Childhood Spaces
The History of Art Department at the University of Birmingham
(http://www.historyofart.bham.ac.uk) has obtained funding from the Arts and
Humanities Research Council for a doctoral studentship, tenable from October
2009. The award will be held in association with Birmingham Archives and
Heritage and the School of Education, University of Birmingham, for the
purposes of collaborative doctoral research.
The successful applicant will use extensive local holdings to research the
history and representation of Birmingham children’s domestic lives. Birmingham
Archives and Heritage holds numerous visual and textual collections of direct
relevance to this project including the vast photographic collection featuring
slum clearance photographs, reformatory portraits, and the photographs
produced by Bill Brandt and Nick Hedges for the Bournville Village Trust and
Shelter respectively. In addition to the photographic collection, Birmingham
Archives and Heritage houses many other archives of potential significance to
this topic. This project constitutes the first sustained historical analysis of the
pictorial representation of children in relation to the spaces they inhabit. The
award holder will also curate a small display for the 2012 ‘Children’s Lives’
exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and develop a set of
curatorial good practice guidelines for Birmingham Archives and Heritage.
Applicants should normally have, or be studying for, a Master’s degree in
History of Art, History of Visual Culture, Design History, History, Museum or
Archive Studies, or a related discipline. The standard tuition fees and
maintenance grant will be paid by the AHRC (http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/). Further
details about the award, the project and the application process are available
