Trainee Archives Assistant

Salary £20,568 - £25,109 per annum (C3 band)
The Parliamentary Archives provides a records management and archives service for both Houses of Parliament, and assists the compliance of the House of Lords administration with Freedom of Information and Data Protection legislation.
The Parliamentary Archives has an opportunity for a self-motivated graduate planning a career in archives to gain work experience in a stimulating environment, maintaining and developing our archives services. The job will be on a fixed-term basis running initially until 15 September 2010, with the possibility of an extension for up to a further 12 months. This training post is intended to provide experience prior to taking up a place on a recognised UK archive course and candidates will be expected to start the application process during the training period.
Based in the Public Services & Outreach Team and reporting to the Archivist, the post holder would be involved in a wide range of professional work and be provided with good developmental opportunities. The work will include accessioning and cataloguing of Committee papers and other Parliamentary records using CALM to office procedure and international archival standards, answering of public enquiries in all media, invigilation in the Search Room, assistance with outreach work such as the creation of exhibition displays, website work and the production of other promotional materials such as leaflets.
You must have a good degree, preferably in History, with a determination to undertake a post-graduate archive qualification following the placement; excellent IS/IT skills, excellent team-working and communication skills; a high level of initiative as well as administrative and organisational ability; proven problem solving skills; and the ability to work quickly under pressure maintaining a high level of accuracy and detail. Some prior experience of archive work would indicate your commitment to a career in this field, and an interest in the British political system or political history would be helpful.
Salary range £20,568 - £25,109 depending on qualifications and experience.
