Cosmopolitan Connections:
Encountering Gujaratis in Multiple Contexts
9th - 10th April 2010 • SOAS, University of London
Keynote Speakers: Prof. Angela Creese & M.G. Vassanji
Call for Papers
From their earliest history, the Gujaratis have been associated with
transnational migration resulting in the formation of new connections and
inter-relationships with other communities as they settled around the
globe. This conference aims to explore the resulting integration,
collaboration and innovation, alongside the tensions, contestations and
challenges associated with the cosmopolitan connections made by the
Gujaratis – both historically and in contemporary times.
The Gujarat Studies Association (GSA) and the SOAS-UCL Centre for Excellence
in ‘Languages of the Wider World’ invite submissions in the form of
abstracts for papers or panels from academics in all disciplines for this
interdisciplinary conference.
Sub-themes include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Globalisation, Transnationalism and Diasporas
• Diversity, Multiculturalism and Pluralism
• Language and Education
• Business and Technology
• Media, the Arts and Literature
• Class, Caste, Gender and Sexuality
• Politics, Citizenship and Nationalism
• Law and Human Rights
• Religion, Religious Movements and Spirituality
• Immigration, Refugees and Indigenous People
Submissions are also encouraged from post-graduate students. A limited
number of student bursaries are available for Master’s level, doctoral and
post-doctoral candidates presenting papers at the conference. For further
details, please visit the GSA website: www.gujaratstudies.org
Abstracts for 20-minute papers in English should be 200–250 words. The

www.gujaratstudies.org and the CETL website: http://www.lww-cetl.ac.uk/.
