May I remind list members that the closing date for the Royal Statistical
Society Manchester Student Prize is getting near - the end of May.
This prize is open to any undergraduate in any discipline at one of the
institutions listed on our website - viz the NW England plus Bangor, Isle of
Man, Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford. Anyone from an unlisted institution is
welcome to contact us to request inclusion!
The intention is to reward those whose final year work - dissertation or the
like - has substantial statistical content. As each institution has
different approaches and forms for their courses, we are of course flexible
in this aspect.
The prize is to encourage statistical thinking among young people from all
disciplines, many of whom will go on to use statistics as a major tool in
their professions even if they do not have formal statistical education or go
on to postgraduate studies. It may be seen both as outreach and as
proselytising the discipline.
Please forward this to colleagues in other areas so that they may consider
their more promising students. While the monetary value is not large, it
does look good on a CV to have had such an award and this may secure them a
better post which is important in the current conditions.
To ensure fairness to those not majoring in mathematics and statistics, we
divide the prize into two streams. We have eminent judges and the awards
will be made in Manchester on July 8th by the RSS President David Hand.
Full details may be seen on our web page rss-manchester.org/prize.html and an
entry form can be found there along with notes for supervisors and the
background.
Best wishes
