NIHR Research Methods Fellowship “Statistical methodology in schizophrenia
research” (closing date: 26.6.2009)
The Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), a school of King’s College London, invites
applications for a Fellowship in Research Methods funded by the National
Institute for Health Research (NIHR) based in London.
This three-year full-time training fellowship is focused on statistical
methodology in schizophrenia research with a special emphasis on evaluation
of complex interventions, causal modelling and genetic epidemiology.
The fellowship will start in the next academic year, September 2009. The
fellow will preferably undertake MSc level training in year 1, by enrolling on a
relevant postgraduate programme, preferably the MSc in Medical Statistics
offered by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (unless the
fellow already has a Masters in medical statistics or equivalent). Building on
this foundation, in years 2 and 3 the fellow will acquire experience in the
analysis of cohort studies, clinical trials and genetic epidemiology with an
emphasis on genome-wide association.
The fellow will obtain extensive training in statistical methodologies for
behavioural research provided by the Department of Biostatistics and
statistical genetics provided by the Statistical Genetic Unit, King’s College
London. During this period the fellow will gain practical experience in projects,
which study the interplay between environmental and genetic factors in
complex diseases through the NIHR funded IMPACT (“Improving physical health
and reducing substance use in severe mental illness”) programme in the
Division of Psychological Medicine and Psychiatry at the IoP. The fellowship will
equip the recipient with skills and experience necessary for a career as an
applied statistician working in medical and mental health research. The fellow
will be encouraged to further his/her research through a PhD and will be
supported to apply for a NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship in the final year.
The successful candidate will have a 1st class honours degree or a 2:1 (or non-
UK equivalent) in mathematics or statistics. Graduates from other fields who
have quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas, for example
science, engineering, computer science or economics graduates may also
apply. Applicants with an appropriate technical qualification and work
experience, or equivalent qualifications, are also welcomed.
The NIHR Research Methods Fellowship will cover the cost of full time
employment of the fellow for the three-year period. It is college policy to
appoint at the base of Grade 5 (King’s College Grade 5 range £27,946 pa
to £32,027 pa inclusive of London Allowance). Up to £4000 in tuition fees for
the MSc course will be met. Tuition fees exceeding this threshold will have to
be paid by the candidate themselves. Research/training costs of up to £1000
per annum will me met.
