Dear colleagues and friends,
RE: 'Recovery as the Art of Life Itself': An invitation to join the
Recovery Academy.

The multidisciplinary recovery movement in the UK, although in its
infancy, is characterized by the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication of
those who support it. The 2008 UKDPC consensus statement enunciated a
clear vision for recovery-orientated provision in the UK – a vision that
is now becoming a reality.
Academics, researchers, and all interested individuals are invited to an
informal one day symposium to discuss how research can best support the
evolution of this vision and stimulate the paradigm-shift in language,
perception, and provision that an authentically recovery-orientated
approach demands.
Bringing together UK based researchers and interested individuals with a
shared belief in sustainable life-long recovery, the broad aims of the
symposium are to:
• Establish and discuss the current state of UK recovery-based
research and evaluation, and how this links in to international and
local knowledge bases.
• Identify gaps in understanding and discern known and potential
research barriers, including those that relate to cultures and existing
treatment systems.
• Map out a UK-specific recovery research agenda, informed by
international and local knowledge and understanding.
• Develop a linked network for sharing research ideas and
evidence, and agreeing on joint studies, funding bids, evaluations, etc.
• Initiate networks of communication and organisational
structures.
As a tangible output, the symposium hopes to inaugurate a “Recovery
Academy” as an independent vehicle for supporting UK recovery research.
It is hoped that the Recovery Academy will build bridges of recovery by
acting as a hub connecting researchers, recovery communities and
traditional treatment agencies to encourage the development of a shared
knowledge/ resource base and facilitate the growth of a common,
affirmative language of recovery in the UK.
