George Mitcheson was born at Long Benton, Northumberland, in about
1796. He worked at Killingworth Colliery till moving to North
Staffordshire in 1827 or 1828, to manage an ironworks and colliery at
Longton, having been recommended to the owners by George Stephenson.
I have been told that he gave evidence to a Parliamentary Committee in
the 1830s, about the use of safety lamps in coal mines. I understand
his evidence ran to about six pages in the published report.
Please can some one advise me what this Committee will have been, and
where I might be able to read this evidence?
Many thanks
Mike
