The 2009/2010 conference series providing up to date information about
the development, use and spread of Caribbean languages today


    Wed 3rd June in London    Fri 5th June in Birmingham    Mon 8th June in 
Manchester


This important conference series follows the launch of the "50 years on" follow 
up to the first international conference held on Creole Languages in 1959 at the 
University of the West Indies.

A team including:  the University of the West Indies, Jamaican Language Unit: 
the University of Birmingham, Black Heritage Studies Team: Learning Links 
International and Jamaica 2K have brought together a range of specialist in this 
field, including Caribbean Academics, Caribbean Poets and Reggae Artistes to 
create a dynamic team to pay "due respect" to these "most modern foreign 
languages" -- the languages that are the living legacy of the Trans--Atlantic 
Trade in Africans that have given the world so much in terms of music and poetry.

The focus of this conference is to explore the position today relating to the 
languages of the Caribbean and their use in the UK, the continuum between 
English based Caribbean languages eg Jamaican and Standard English and the need 
for English language support, as well as interpreting and translation, or 
language advocacy.
	
The speakers and workshop leaders include experts from the Caribbean and the UK, 
including:

? Prof Hubert Devonish, Director of the Jamaican Language Unit, University of 
the West Indies and author of many publications including: "Language and Liberation"
? Natalie Fagan-Brown, Linguist, trainer and developer of the first accredited 
UK Jamaican Language and Culture Course, a former teacher in Jamaica
? Professor Gus John, Chair and Chief Executive at Gus John Partnership Ltd
and visiting Professor to the University of Strathclyde
? YASUS AFARI, Performance Poet and author of "Overstanding Rastafari"
? Morgan Delphinis, author of "Caribbean and African Languages"
? Barbara Ledgister, Jamaican Attorney-at-Law and co-founder of Patois Personnel
? Macka B, Reggae Artiste and song writer

This is an opportunity for several books to be made available in UK including 
"Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way", as well as new editions of "Language and 
Liberation" by Prof Hubert Devonish, "Caribbean and African Languages" by Morgan 
Dalphinis,  "Language in Jamaica" by Dr Pauline Christie, "Eye Pen" by YASUS 
AFARI featuring "Patwa Taakin", "Inna mi Heart" by Joan Andrea Hutchinson and 
DVDs and CDs (Di Jumiekan Langwij Alfabet)


This event will be of interest and relevance to a range of people including:

? lecturers from Adult Education
? academics and researchers from Higher Education
? staff working in Offender Services
? staff working in Health Services, Mental Health Services and other public services
