CFP - Europe Twenty Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall: Overcoming “East and West”
Location: New Zealand
Call for Papers Deadline: 2009-05-29
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 symbolizes the end of an era in which Europe, and the world, suffered ideological, political, social and cultural divisions. Twenty years later many of the previous political, economic, social and cultural divisions between the European West and East have been eliminated. Some, however remain, despite the political and socio-economic transformations of the Central and Eastern European countries since the 1990s.
This conference reflects on the origin, nature and impact of the divisions between the ‘two Europes’. We welcome papers which examine the divisions within Europe from a broad range of disciplines, including but not limited to: sociology, political science, economics, history and cultural studies. Papers might examine specific political, socio-economic and cultural developments in the countries of former Eastern Europe and/or the “Europe of 15” after 1989. They can refer to the problem of ‘divisions’ generally or in the context of relations among EU member states. Scholars who provide new theoretical and/or empirical insights into the events which led to or occurred in 1989 are also strongly encouraged to submit abstracts and present their papers at the conference.
Keynote speakers: Christopher Patten, Baron Patten of Barnes, Chancellor of Oxford University, former Governor of Hong Kong and EU Commissioner for External Relations,; Professor Volker Rittberger, University of Tűbingen; Ambassador David Daly, Delegation of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand.
Please submit abstracts of less than 300 words to [log in to unmask] by 29 May 2009. The organizers expect to inform participants of the acceptance of their papers by 15 June. Presenters will be expected to circulate their papers among conference participants prior to the event in order to insure lively discussion. Some papers may be selected for inclusion in a guest-edited issue of an international journal. The organizers expect to be able to cover local accommodation costs for paper presenters.
