You might like to take a look at a book by Nicholas Freeling called The
Janeites. It is a ferociously clever Euro-thriller, published c. 2002 - not
terribly easy to follow, but so far as I recall - with due reference to
Kipling - a course of Jane Austen was suggested as a cure to a melancholic
secret service figure. Come to think of it, somewhere I have a book by
Freeling called Criminal Convictions in which he looks at writers of 'crime
fiction', including Kipling.
