I hope list members will find this day relevant to re-inventing design education. As the
programme shows, most of the presentations relate either to design or to art doctorates.

ESRC seminar series on New Forms of Doctorate
-----------------------------------

The Lansdown Centre's first contribution to an important series of seminars supported by
the ESRC (the UK Economic and Social Research Council) will take place in central London
on Tuesday 19 May 2009.

Following the successful formula of the previous two seminars (at the Institute of
Education and at Coventry University), the day combines individual case studies with in-
depth investigations of key issues.

-----------------------------------
Booking for free event
-----------------------------------
The event is free (including refreshments), but places must be booked in advance.

For full information and to book a place, please see http://newdoctorates.blogspot.com/

The speakers
-----------------------------------
We are fortunate in having as our guest Prof. Stephen Scrivener of the University of the
Arts, London, who has immense experience of doctoral research and an extensive history
of publications and advisory roles on the relationship between research and creativity
(see http://www.chelsea.arts.ac.uk/17858.htm).

Also joining us is Prof. Carol Costley, of Middlesex University's Institute for Work Based
Learning. Carol will make an important contribution to the Series by broadening the
discussion beyond the PhD to other forms of doctorate. The Institute has pioneered
Professional Doctorates (DProf) and is a HEFCE Centre for Excellence in Teaching and
Learning.

The day includes presentations by practising artist-researchers Ralf Nuhn and Helen
Bendon, a critical review of the debate on practice in research by Prof. David Durling and
a defence of the written thesis by Dr. Stephen Boyd Davis, head of the Lansdown Centre.
The Centre undertakes multidiciplinary research at the conjunction of creative practice
and technology.

Speakers for the day:
Prof. Stephen Scrivener, University of the Arts, London
Prof. David Durling, Art and Design Research Institute, Middlesex University
Prof. Carol Costley, Institute for Work Based Learning, Middlesex University
Dr. Stephen Boyd Davis, Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts, Middlesex University
Helen Bendon, Lansdown Centre, Middlesex University
Dr. Ralf Nuhn, Lansdown Centre, Middlesex University

The series is led by Prof. Richard Andrews at the Institute of Education.
