Teaching about Malaria
Using globally relevant, cutting-edge science to teach key scientific
concepts
Malaria is a topic with the potential to enrich the teaching of science,
and it can be particularly useful for exploring the links between
science and wider social, political and economic issues. This exciting
new course will help teachers to see how different aspects of the
science Programme of Study can be met through a project or series of
lessons on malaria. The course will explore the applications and
implications of the science relating to malaria, set the disease in the
wider context, analyse data and evaluate potential solutions to the
problem.
Participants will have the opportunity to question and learn from
several scientists working towards innovative treatment, diagnosis and
prevention of malaria. In addition, participants will explore the
potential of several discussion techniques to enhance learning about
malaria, the nature of scientific investigations and the application of
science to problems.
By the end of the course teachers will feel confident and enthusiastic to:
• use malaria as a topic to address the nature of science
• engage with controversial scientific issues such as malaria
• apply innovative participatory activities in their science lessons
• bring a global, societal and ethical perspective to science lessons
The course will run on Wednesday 1 July at the Science Learning Centre
North West, Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Education,
799 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury, Manchester M20 2RR. Cost £20 each.
