In my own view, Auden's "Under Which Lyre" is one of the key poems of
the twentieth century, marking the beginning of the end of the great
modernist poetic and the first rotten-wood glimmer of the whole smugly
comfortable flatulent academic miasma which over the next thirty years
at last triumphantly choked the life out of English language poetry.
