Message from the MIST mailing list.
Dear colleagues,
Following the MIST business meeting at NAM 2009 it was decided that it
would be advisable for the MIST community to develop a document
outlining its science vision; identify the things we are good at and
what areas we want to emphasise in the future. The preparation of such
a document is timely with some portions of our science area potentially
moving to NERC, the development of the STFC science vision and the
current debate surrounding the future of UK science.
The suggested document has two thrusts:
1) the first is to inform. Thus it has been proposed that the community
produces a series of briefing papers on important subjects within our
science area. These are executive summaries of important topics such as
spaceweather, geomagnetism, sun-climate links, etc. These can be used to
plug holes in the understanding of policy makers and funding agencies as
to the relevance and importance of our work.
2) the second thrust is to identify future interests. We wish to produce
a series of 'White papers' to describe the community consensus on areas
of interest for future research. Topics might include involvement in
particular future space missions, the development of new instrumentation
and the science that it answers. What do we see as the next big
challenges in MIST related science and how does it fit within the broad
RCUK/government themes?
The community is well aware of the contributions we can make and it is
essential that policy makers and research councils are made aware also.
MIST council hopes to stimulate debate within the community and would
like to invite suggestions and volunteers to offer contributions in
developing both briefing documents and strategy papers.
It is important to note that offering a suggestion for a topic does NOT
constitute volunteering to prepare any part of the document. Though
please consider volunteering for this community effort which will
benefit us all.
best regards
Andrew (on behalf of MIST council)
