South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group are marking the fact that it is 60 years since the closure of Frog Lane Colliery in Coalpit Heath, near Bristol. This pit was the last deep mine in the Bristol and South Glos coalfield.
There will be an exhibition (consisting of artefacts, photographs and display panels) at Coalpit Heath Miners Institute (aka Village Hall) on Sat 2 May from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and on Sunday 3 May from 10:30pm to 2:30pm and from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. A new book about Frog Lane compiled by SGRMG and Y&DHC members will be on sale at this exhibition, as will SGMRG publication "Kingswood Coal", which gives a history of all the coal mines in S Glos and also includes many pictures and a map reference for each one. Some of the stunning photographs on display and in the new book were taken by the celebrated Cornish photographer JC Burrows in the very early 1900's.
