Post-doctoral position in philosophy, sociology and history of science

Starting date: September 2009 (for up to four years)
The position will be full or part time depending on the available
financial support (to be known in June)

The postdoctoral activities will be a part of the ANR funded project
PratiScienS directed by Léna Soler in Nancy at the Henri Poincaré
Archives (LHSP – UMR 7117 of the CNRS). The aim of this project, which
is carried out by a small interdisciplinary group of researchers of
mutually completing backgrounds and competences, is to discuss the
consequences of the so-called « practical turn » in philosophy of
science, that is to examine what we have learnt and can still learn
about the nature of science from an approach emphasizing the role of
scientific practices and of the filed studies about them.

The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to study in real time some of
the researches taking place at the Institut Jean Lamour of the Henri
department, see the following link:
http://www.lpm.u-nancy.fr/activites/webdelegue.php?aid=2&tid=89 ). The
aim of the field study is to develop, on the basis of the observation
and analysis of ongoing experimental researches in the laboratory, and
in connection with the core philosophical issues of the project
PratiScienS
(http://poincare.univ-nancy2.fr/Activites/?contentId=6163&languageId=1
), an epistemological characterization of the scientific practices whose
scope and validity could go beyond the particular case under
consideration. The field-study will focus on the daily activities of one
the laboratory researcher, who has been working on the subject for about
twenty years and, moreover is an active member of the PratiScienS group.
This rather uncommon situation in the field of laboratory studies
constitutes an original feature of this research, a feature whose
methodological implications will have to be taken into account. The
field study will also concern the interactions with other researchers,
both inside and outside the laboratory, and some broader contextual
elements (such as the strategic choices, investments, available means…).
The resulting analysis will be discussed on a regular basis within the
PratiScienS group.

Given the specific nature of this interdisciplinary research, we seek
candidates that show both an ability to deal with the technical aspects
of a research in experimental physics, and a competence in philosophy of
science. A professional training both in physics and in philosophy of
science would be preferable; a background in sociology of science and in
methodology of laboratory studies will be considered an advantage. A
good command of French and English is required.

Applicants should send a CV including a list of publications to Léna
Soler ([log in to unmask]) before May the 1st, 2009.

http://www.lpm.u-nancy.fr/activites/webdelegue.php?aid=2&tid=89 ).

Merci de répondre par courriel à Léna Soler ([log in to unmask])
publications.
