Culture-bound Syndromes
Funded by the AHRC

University of Lancaster
This one-day workshop will be the third event of a new Multidisciplinary Research Network on The Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease, funded by the AHRC. The network is managed by Dr Havi Carel (UWE) and Dr Rachel Cooper (Lancaster).

Within the broader framework of the project, which examines the concepts of health, illness and disease, this workshop will focus on culture-bound syndromes. How can disorders be created and destroyed by cultural changes? Are such conditions as 'real' as those that manifest uniformly across cultures? How do culture-bound syndromes challenge concepts of health, illness and disease?
