REMINDER:
A Workshop Series of Qualitative Research Masterclasses is being
offered at the University of Dundee (throughout the week beginning 18th
May, 2009), facilitated by Prof Rosaline Barbour (author of Introducing
Qualitative Research: A Student Guide to the Craft of Doing Qualitative
Research, Sage, 2008 and Doing Focus Groups, Sage, 2008).
Please contact Kristi Herd on [log in to unmask] for further
details and booking forms.
18th & 19th May
2 day Intensive Focus Group Workshop (N.B. participants are required to
register for both days)
Fee £255 (includes a copy of Doing Focus Groups); reduced fee for
unfunded students £155 (Limited student places) Also includes resource
packs, teas/coffees and lunch.
Day 1: Designing Focus Group Studies and Generating Data Using Focus
Groups
Day 2: Analyzing and Presenting Focus Group Research
Participants will have the opportunity to carry out group exercises on
sampling, generating data, developing a provisional coding frame, coding
transcripts (from a cumulative dataset) and refining a coding frame.
The virtual topic will be fathers’ attendance at deliveries.
20th May
1 day Advanced Analysis Workshop - Identifying and Interrogating
Patterning
Fee £145 (includes a copy of Introducing Qualitative Research); reduced
fee for unfunded students £95 (limited student places) Also includes
resource packs, teas/coffees and lunch.
Participants will have access to a condensed dataset derived from an
interview study of couples’ experiences of sub-fertility. Small group
work will provide an opportunity to develop and refine a coding frame
and to carry out a ‘frames and grids’ exercise to identify and
interrogate patterning, drawing on pre-coded data excerpts.
21st May
1 day Advanced Analysis Workshop - Using Theory in Qualitative Data
Analysis
Fee £145 (includes a copy of Introducing Qualitative Research); reduced
fee for unfunded students £95 (limited student places) Also includes
resource packs, teas/coffees and lunch.
Participants will interrogate a selection of pre-coded data excerpts
from an interview study of couples’ experiences of sub-fertility (the
same study as 20th May workshop, but using a wider selection of data
excerpts). They will gain experience in applying the ‘constant
comparative method’ in using data to interrogate and refine the
theoretical framework of biographical disruption, drawing on a number of
published papers which utilize and critique this framework.
22nd May
1 day Workshop on Writing-Up Qualitative Research
Fee £145 (includes a copy of Introducing Qualitative Research); reduced
fee for unfunded students £95 (limited student places) Also includes
resource packs, teas/coffees and lunch.
Participants will obtain hints on presenting qualitative findings and
writing for publication. They will have the opportunity to critique a
‘paper in progress’ and to review published papers. Advice will
also be provided on developing a publication plan and examples of
published work originating from a variety of studies will be available
for consultation. Participants can also contact the facilitator prior
to the workshop with queries about individual publication plans.
Reduced fees for attendance at more than one workshop - £255(£155 for
students) for 2 X 1-day workshops; £395 (£235 for students) for 3 X
1-day workshops; £515 (£310 for students) for the Focus Group Workshop
plus 2 X 1-day workshops or £645 (£385 for students) for all 5 days.
Reduced rates also available if more than one person attends from any
one institution.
