Two full-time ESRC/CASE PhD Studentships and One full-time Sociology of Health and Illness (SHI) Foundation Collaborative Studentship

 

Applications are invited for two '+3' full-time studentships supported by the ESRC and other agencies under the CASE studentship scheme for work on two innovative projects, to begin in October 2009.    In addition, applications are invited for one '1+3' or +'3' full-time studentship supported by the Sociology of Health and Illness Foundation, also to begin in October 2009.

 

1. LEADERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN COMPLEX ORGANISATIONS: THE CASE OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST

 

Supported by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (+3)

 

The proposed studentship examines leadership development in Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (NHCT) with the aim of understanding of how best to develop the capability for enhancing leadership capacity in the NHS. The research is inter-disciplinary in nature and draws upon academic literature within organizational studies health services management and policy.

 

The lead academic supervisor is Professor Andy Lockett (strategy and entrepreneurship) and Professor Graeme Currie (public sector management).

 

The studentship covers all tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (£3,390 for 09/10) and for  Home applicants or EU applicants who meet Research Council eligibility requirements based on residency, the ESRC pays a starting tax-free maintenance grant of £15,290 per year.  In addition, for all Home/EU applicants, a further £2,000 per year will be payable from the partner organisation.

 

2. AN INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVE UPON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF NURSES AND ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THE NHS

 

Supported by Department of Health - NHS East Midlands (+3)

 

The project will examine models for leadership development, including existing leadership development programmes for nurses and AHPs regionally (within the East Midlands) and nationally, and participants' response to development. The project will seek to make recommendations to inform leadership development content and process for nurses and AHPs in the NHS.  

 

The lead academic supervisor is Professor Graeme Currie (public sector management) and Professor Mark Avis (social contexts of health).

 

The studentship covers all tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (£3,390 for 09/10) and for  Home applicants or EU applicants who meet Research Council eligibility requirements based on residency, the ESRC pays a starting tax-free maintenance grant of £15,290 per year.  In addition, for all Home/EU applicants, a further £10,000 per year will be payable from the partner organisation.

 

3. BOUNDARY WORK IN PHARMACY: SAFE PRESCRIBING ACROSS OCCUPATIONAL BOUNDARIES

 

Supported by Sociology of Health and Illness Foundation (1+3) or (+3)

 

This project investigates change in the professional roles and boundaries for non-medical prescribers in community and hospital pharmacies, drawing on theories and debates within medical sociology, the professions and work, health policy and social pharmacy. Non-medical prescribing (prescribing by groups such as nurses and pharmacists) is described as easing the burden on doctors and improving patient access, however, it also brings to the fore significant questions about the changing social organisation of healthcare work. In particular how roles are defined and contested and, in particular, how issues of risk and safety influence this process. Although a broad research design has been developed it is expected that the appointed student will have a strong role in further refining this in line with their own theoretical and research interests. 

 

The lead academic supervisor is Dr Justin Waring (public services management) and Professor Claire Anderson (social pharmacy).

 

The studentship covers all tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (£3,390 for 09/10) and for  Home applicants or EU applicants who meet Research Council eligibility requirements based on residency, a starting tax-free maintenance grant of £13,290 per year.  

 

 

Background Qualifications for ESRC/CASE Studentships 

Candidates should have a First or upper second class Honours degree in a relevant discipline, and have, or expect to have by autumn 2009, a Masters qualification from an ESRC recognised research training course or a Masters degree which includes a substantial research element or equivalent research experience in a work setting. Background Qualifications for SHI Foundation Collaborative Studentship

Candidates should have a First or upper second class Honours degree in a relevant discipline, such as sociology, social policy or pharmacy, for entry on to 1+3 programme, and where appropriate a relevant Masters qualification, for entry directly on to the +3 programme.
