medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> *were* there tombs in those side chapels of St. Mary's of Paris?
Christopher,
There certainly were in some of them, but since they were mostly cleared out, presumably in
the 18th century, only fragmentary remains exist, some in museums and some highly
restored examples have been placed back in the chevet chapels. Gaignieres and others
have recorded many tombs that have disappeared. They may exist, but I have never seen
any systematic study of these chapels and their functions. There may be something in Alain
Erlande-Brandenburg's book on Notre-Dame, but our copy is currently in my wife's office, so I
can't check.
Cheers,
Jim
