medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
St. Peter Celestine (Pope Celestine V) will forever
be associated in literary minds With "The Great Denial,"
for having abdicated the papacy and been castigated by
Dante in Canto III of The Inferno where he is placed
among the Indifferent in the Vestibule of Hell.
Any damage to these beautiful structures is regrettable
along with the tragedy of human loss.

Subject: [M-R] Earthquake damage in and around L'Aquila
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All,
The press coverage of the earthquake that struck L'Aquila (AQ) in Abruzzo
this morning has of course focussed on the human loss (at least 92 reported
dead). Not surprisingly, there has also been damage to the area's medieval
monuments. Some of the affected churches are listed here:
http://www.wallstreetitalia.com/articolo.asp?art_id=692489
These include Santa Maria di Collemaggio, the resting place of St. Peter
Celestine (Celestine V); Santa Maria Paganica, and San Silvestro. Some
views and brief, Italian-language accounts of these before the earthquake
are here:
