We are trying to establish whether we should continue to allow the use
of our VLE (Moodle) for summative assessment, or should opt for a
separate 'secure' system such as Questionmark. I would be very
interested to hear what other institutions' attitudes are:
* Does your institution allow the use of quizzes in the VLE for
summative assessment?
* Does your institution insist on the use of Questionmark Perception or
other dedicated 'secure' e-assessment tools instead of the VLE?
* Or do you have a mixed economy?
* Are you planning a change in policy?
I know that some institutions insist on the use of Questionmark
Perception or other dedicated 'secure' e-assessment tools instead of the
VLE and I'd be interested to hear why the VLE is not felt to be suitable.
I would hope that if we do the following we would be able to ensure a
secure environment for testing through the VLE:
* provide appropriate support and training for staff in setting up the quiz
* check quiz settings
* ensure that students display their ID cards and that the invigilator
checks that the correct person has logged in
* ensure that all quizzes have a password, which they are only told at
the start of the exam so that the quiz can only be accessed by those present
* use IP ranges to ensure that the tests were taken from the exam room
* have active invigilation to ensure that students don't Google, refer
to their own notes, text a friend etc
* check VLE logs afterwards to ensure that the student didn't log out
and in again
* backup the quiz immediately after the test
I'd be very interested to hear from others what your institution's
attitude to VLE vs 'secure' system is. I'd be happy to collate
(anonymised) responses and circulate a summary.
