As a consequence of the second restoration of Ferdinand VII to the Spanish throne in 1823 a good number of liberal intellectuals, politicians and clerics were forced to seek refuge in London. These exiles best represented Spain's most ideologically and culturally advanced sectors. Their cultural, literary and political activities had a relevant impact both in the madre patria and in London itself. This two-days conference will cover will be a platform for the most recent research on the Liberal exiles in London, a salient subject of cultural and historiographic study.
The Conference will be inaugurated with a public lecture by our key note speaker Professor Salvador García Castañeda (Ohio State University) on
'The Spanish émigrés and the London literary Scene (1814-1834)'.
