italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
CALL FOR PAPERS
LANGUAGE, SPACE AND OTHERNESS IN ITALY SINCE 1861
International conference, British School at Rome, 24-25 June 2010
The aim of the conference is to identify and investigate the main
rhetorical strategies and devices used in Italy since Unification to
define "others" and those used to resist such definitions. How have
different types of discourse and media produced certain "marked"
categories of people – for example the poor, sexual deviants, prostitutes,
colonized subjects, gypsies, illegal immigrants, persons with disability
or with mental illness? What happens when some of these people react with
their own discourses, counter-definitions and actions? How do definitions
of difference and otherness work across space, for instance by drawing
boundaries or constructing oppositions: core/periphery, metropolitan
centre/colony, straight/bent, inside/outside, high/low, clean/dirty? Why
have maps, borders and coastlines acquired such strong significance at
certain historical moments? Participants are invited to examine these
processes in written and printed texts, oral life stories, songs,
photographs, radio and moving image media.
Confirmed speakers so far include John Agnew, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Charles
Burdett, Derek Duncan, John Foot, Mia Fuller, Robert Gordon, and
Alessandro Portelli. The conference will take place at the British School
at Rome, in Valle Giulia. It will coincide with the opening of an
exhibition of still and moving images illustrating selected historical
cases of otherness.
Papers on any theme or period relevant to the conference title, including
case studies, are welcome from researchers in various disciplines and from
non-academics. Papers may be given either in Italian or English. It is
expected that a book of contributions to the conference will be published
in 2011.
Send a provisional title and abstract (max 500 words) of your proposed
paper in English or Italian by email to the conference organizer, David
Forgacs ([log in to unmask]), by 26 June 2009. Accepted proposals will be
confirmed by 24 July 2009.
LINGUAGGI, SPAZIO E ALTERITA' IN ITALIA DALL'UNITA' A OGGI
Convegno internazionale, Accademia Britannica, Roma, 24-25 giugno 2010
metropoli/colonia, normale/deviante, dentro/fuori, alto/basso,
pulito/sporco?
trasmissioni radiofoniche e televisive.
Ben-Ghiat, Charles Burdett, Derek Duncan, John Foot, Mia Fuller, Robert
Gordon e Alessandro Portelli. Il convegno avra' luogo all'Accademia
comunicazione all'organizzatore, David Forgacs ([log in to unmask]),
entro il 26 giugno 2009. Si dara' conferma entro il 24 luglio 2009 delle
comunicazioni selezionate.
