Actually I think it was Robert Shepherd that taught him and he did a wonderful
job of creating the conditions that allowed Desmond to develop as a writer.
He just attended some of my topic specific lectures. I found him a
wonderfully bright writer with a wicked sense of humour.
I don't understand why you feel it necessary to turn everything into a
personal attack on people who do not roll over and agree with you. I don't
propose to debate the points you tried to make in your article on Heaney
because I don't think it a worthwhile exercise or use of my time.
I would just say that you are in danger of looking increasingly silly and trivial,
a bit like the points you were trying to make about Heaney.
So please keep your vitriol to yourself and do not think for a moment that you
have some sort of target in me.
