Information Presentation in Everyday Environments
- Visual, Spatial, and Cognitive Aspects -
A workshop held in the frame of the
HCI 2009 conference,
Cambridge University, Cambridge (UK)
September 1, 2009
http://www.mms.tu-berlin.de/3DworkshopHCI.html
Deadline: April 30, 2009
Human Computer Interaction is not anymore limited to two dimensional
displays, but instead using also mobile or augmented/virtual reality
technologies. This poses new research questions on how information
should be visualized in the three dimensional space, including
technical as well as psychological issues such as spatial cognition,
perception and processing of information. Researchers of various
disciplines work on this field, with different perspectives and
different research goals. This workshop wants to bring together
these researchers to present their viewpoints, exchange and debate
ideas, discuss common problems and examine current and future
research questions.
SUBJECT
The workshop is set to address the following subjects:
1. Information Visualization and Presentation
- How can three-dimensional information presentation environments
be classified?
- Which technical aspects need to be considered?
- Which practical problems do developers face (e.g.
user-tracking, multiple surfaces, multi-user applications,
real-virtual information combination, display properties,
field of view aspects)?
- Is eye-tracking a useful tool in this context?
2. Human Perception and Processing of visual information
- How can the three-dimensional perceptual realm be defined?
Is Previc's classification useful and sufficient?
- Are there task specific differences in perception and
processing of information when different perceptual depths
are considered?
- How can mental workload be minimized and how are resources
utilized optimally?
- How can mental workload be measured in this context?
- Is individual adaptation of 3D-information systems necessary?
- How can a successful adaptation be measured?
3. Applications
- With respect to Ubiquitous Computing, are metaphors and studies
from the AR/VR domain sufficient or need other domains be
included?
- Which additional disciplines besides computer science,
mechatronics, engineering and psychology could contribute to
our research?
- How do people optimally interact in 3D-environments?
- How can we achieve higher acceptability of AR/VR technologies
in everyday environments?
PARTICIPATION
Individuals interested in participating in this full-day workshop
should submit a position paper that addresses one of the three areas
listed above. Position papers should be limited to 4 pages using
ACM's 2-column format
(http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).
SUBMISSIONS
All submissions should be as PDF or MS Word files and sent by email
to the workshop committee:
