User-centred Development of Innovative Products for food handling by
older and disabled people
PhD studentship in HCI at the University of York
from October 2009
Together with colleagues in the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield,
Prof. Helen Petrie and Dr Paul Cairns of the HCI Group Department of
Computer Science have won a White Rose Studentship Network which will
fund three PhD students, one at each of the network universities. The
goal of the network is to apply advanced engineering materials to
improve handling of objects for all users, regardless of ability,
with the specific application to improve access to food and food
preparation objects and packaging for older and disabled users.
Towards the development of "smart objects" in the kitchen for
disabled and older people, this project will develop an understanding
of the needs and problems of disabled and older people in handling
objects in the kitchen: food products and their packaging and kitchen
appliances and utensils. This will lead to the development of a
range of prototype "smart objects" that will assist disabled and
older people in the kitchen. The use of such objects will be
explored in an iterative user-centred design and evaluation of the
prototypes.
