Oxford University Library Services
Special Collections, futureArch Project
Library Graduate Trainee
Fixed term contract 1 year (beginning September)
£15,216 p.a.
This post is located within the futureArch project: a programme of work
to develop and embed systems that enable the Library to collect, manage,
preserve and provide access to contemporary hybrid archives and
manuscripts, that is to say collections comprising a mixture of
traditional and born-digital materials. The project is a collaboration
involving the Special Collections and Western Manuscripts (SCWMSS) and
Systems and e-Research Services (SERS) departments. See
<http://www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/beam/projects/futurearch>.
The post is intended to provide pre-course experience to a graduate
prior to undergoing professional training on one of the recognised
archive courses. It would particularly suit an applicant wishing to
develop an understanding of how the shift to digital communications
impacts the work of archivists.
The postholder will support the curatorial and technical work of the
futureArch project; he or she will assist archivists to process hybrid
archives and sample a variety of traditional archival work, including
providing services to researchers in the Special Collections Reading
Room. The postholder will also participate in activities organised
through the OWL Graduate Trainee Scheme (see
<http://www.lib.ox.ac.uk/owl/Trainee_scheme/trainee_scheme.html>).
The postholder should be educated to degree level or equivalent, possess
good interpersonal and communication skills, including confidence in
working with the public, be discreet when working with confidential
material and he or she should have a genuine desire to develop skills in
advance of taking a postgraduate qualification in archival
administration. Experience of working within an archive or library
service and/or experience in a customer service role is desirable.
