Dear all
There are places left on the visit to Barnardos Barkingside Girls Village
organised by Archives for London (AfL) on Wednesday 15th April at 2pm
Cost: £5. Number of places: 15
In 1873 Dr Thomas John Barnardo and his wife were married and set up home
in a property known as Mossford Lodge, in what was then, the quiet village of
Barkingside near Ilford, Essex. He saw the need to give children the chance to
grown up in clear air and through extensive fundraising created what was to
become the Girls’ Village Home, which at one time had a population of some
1,300 girls aged from two to 16 years..
By the middle of 1875, enough money had been raised to build 14 cottages at
a cost of around £500. By 1879, there were 24 cottages, each housing 15-20
girls, and each with a Superintendent to look after them, who was known
as ‘mother’.
By the time of Dr Barnardo’s death in 1905 there were 64 cottages centered
around three village greens covering 60 acres. In addition to the cottages
there new schools, a hospital, a laundry which washed 18,500 items a week,
a children’s church, allotments and greenhouses for growing food.
The Village became a mixed home in the mid 1930’s and closed as a residential
home in the late 1980’s. In 1990 much of the site was designated the
Barnardo’s Village Conservation. Today the site comprises one of the original
greens surrounded by cottages one of which is now a small museum, the
Village Church, and the Barnardo memorial.
