Hi Hannah
Largely depends on who your target audiences are. Younger children are a
priority for us (keep them happy and the whole family will be happy!)
and so we have gone out to Surestart groups at children's centres in the
past to meet parents and informally test our ideas for gallery the
activities that will interest their children.
We've also involved people who haven't visited the museum before by
going through community organisations, and recruited for focus groups
targetting first time visitors from the local area (which won't be an
option for you now you're closed, obviously) at our community open
weekends, when people in local wards are given vouchers for free visits.
I remember reading that Sheffield Museums did a lot of consultation for
the development of Weston Park, which (it was reported) included asking
people 'if the museum was a person, who would it be?'. There's an
interesting article about their development process, including
consultation, here:

Dear All
We have recently closed The Bridewell in Norwich to undergo a large HLF
funded redevelopment project.
We have conducted our first phase of consultation but are keen to hear
about recent projects in the sector - especially more unusual forms of
consultation methods.
Furthermore, I have been tasked with writing and implementing a Public
Engagement / Audience Development Plan and would be grateful to see
recent examples from other museums. Again, we are looking to continue to
build audiences through innovative programmes as well as more 'bread and
butter' activities.
Keeping the museum in the hearts and minds of local people will be a
great challenge, so any ideas would be most gratefully received!
Many thanks
Hannah
