I know I have come to this thread a little late but I thought you
might be interested in how a non-institution is using twitter.
Twitter has become the third marketing string in our bow (Podcast,
Blog, Twitter). I have over 6000 followers and run two separate
Twitter account. The first is @boaglinks which is basically a news
stream as many of you have mentioned. However my most popular account
is @boagworld. This is MUCH more personal and contains a mixture of
personal comment, industry news and useful information. People like
engaging with people NOT institutions/companies
I believe the real power of twittering is in engaging with your
community. I often reply to my followers. However, I normally do this
through direct messages unless the content is useful to others.
Basically twitter has provided an amazingly powerful marketing tool.
When I twitter a link I get 400+ click throughs pretty much instantly
and often many more when the link is retweeted.
Can I suggest a couple of good links to get you started with twitter.
One is my own post on smashing magazine... http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/02/03/8-useful-tips-to-become-successul-with-twitter/
and the second is an entire site dedicated to using twitter as a
social media tool... http://www.twitip.com/
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
Paul
