UNDERSTANDING PLACES

A one day Interdisciplinary PhD colloquium in the fields of architecture, planning, urban regeneration, tourism, construction and transport.

School of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Westminster, London


July the 6th 2009

‘Understanding Places’ will be the central theme of this PhD colloquium organised by the doctoral students from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at University of Westminster , London . This one day colloquium will act as a platform for knowledge exchange, creative thinking, discussion and a networking opportunity.

Do not miss this unique opportunity for PhD students to share ideas, meet and network in the vibrant and inspiring environment of central London !


THEME:
This conference will explore the concept of place in a number of ways – for example, by investigating how socio-cultural-political processes and interactions create place, how people relate to and perceive places, and how movement and mobility affect sense of place. Following the key strands within the overarching category of the Built Environment abstracts for papers are invited for the following categories:

- Architecture;
- Planning;
- Urban Development and Regeneration;
- Tourism;
- Transport;
- Property and Construction Management;
- Adjoining fields of social sciences that are involved in related research.

PhD students undertaking interdisciplinary research connected to the main topic areas are also welcome to submit papers. In addition to this, we would like to encourage entries on:
- PhD-related issues (examples of this could be particular stages of research degree - transfer, viva, writing up)
- Specific research methods
- Different types of thesis (e.g. PhD by design)


THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT (SABE):
The School of Architecture and the Built Environment is located at the University of Westminster's Marylebone Campus, opposite Baker Street tube station in central London. SABE is involved in a wide variety of interdisciplinary research activities relating to all aspects of architecture and the built environment, ranging from city planning and regeneration to transport and tourism. ABSTACTS SUBMISSION:
Abstracts from participants will be received in the following format: name, department, university, conference paper title and a 300-word abstract to the following e-mail: [log in to unmask] .

Deadline for applications is May 15th, 2009.
Paper presentations must not exceed 20 minutes (not including Q&A time).

ORGANISING COMMITTEE
The colloquium is organised by a team of enthusiastic PhD students from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment. The organising committee will be also responsible for the selection of papers.

COLLOQUIUM SCHEDULE AND ORGANISATION:
The one day colloquium will comprise a combination of formal and informal events, allowing participants to both expand their knowledge about their research field and provide a platform for networking opportunities. .

The colloquium is funded by the School for Architecture of the University of Westminster. However, a small attendance fee of £15pp will be required in order to cover part of the catering costs (accommodation and evening meal not included).

- 10.30-11.30: Keynote presentation by Dean of School professor Jeremy Till
- 11.30-12.00: Coffee break/networking
- 12.00-13.30: Parallel sessions
- 13.30-15.00: Lunch/networking
- 15.00-16.30: Parallel sessions
- 16.30- 17.00: Coffee break
- 17.00-18.30: Parallel sessions 
- 20.30 Informal evening event
