On behalf of our partners at the Conference Consortium we'd like to alert you to the forthcoming
conference:
IN SOMEBODY ELSE'S SHOES
Drugs, Alcohol and Criminal Justice: How do we make a difference?
25 June 2009, Friends House, London, England
Organised by the Conference Consortium in partnership with Drink and Drugs News, CNWL Health Trust
and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Health Trust
The conference will look at the journey taken by clients through the criminal justice system. It
aims to establish what is working and the 'pinch points' in the system, in the context of often
overlapping and sometimes contradictory strategies and frameworks created by different government
bodies. This working event will encourage delegates to 'unpick' confusion and barriers, and adopt a
problem-solving approach to improving practice and delivery of services.
A programme of workshops will give delegates the opportunity to look at the system from different
perspectives; notably arrest referral, court teams, probation (particularly those who supervise DRRs
and run the programmes), prison staff, health workers and doctors who deliver rapid prescribing and
triage interventions, police officers and magistrates.
Working groups will identify good and effective practice, highlighting examples of
inter-disciplinary working. They will then formulate questions and suggestions to be put to a panel
comprising the Home Office/MoJ, DoH/NTA, DrugScope and parliamentarians. This will provide an
opportunity for those in a position of authority and with influence to hear the views of
practitioners.
To ensure balance in the proceedings, the Consortium will make places available free of charge to a
number of service users who will be represented in each group, providing a perspective of what it is
like to navigate around the complicated and often time consuming 'processes'.
Delegate rate: £145 + 15% VAT.
Registration is available at www.conferenceconsortium.com.
