Here at Newcastle we are undertaking a JISC project called IDMAPS (Institutional Data Management for Personalisation and Syndication) which is examining how to manage data flows in an institute to ensure applications have the data they need, and then how to exploit that to integrate applications into web2.0 mashup/portal style approaches.

We also have a great deal of experience in using shibboleth and an institutional web single sign on platform to allow portal integration.
More than happy to share experiences
