Personally I think that this can be a fairly dodgy issue. Many times in
my career I have had cases where individuals have gone "sick" with
stress or similar when there has been an altercation/disagreement/event
at work that is the precipitating factor in the disciplinary process. I
believe there are some very cynical people out there who call it
"stroppy sick". My personal view is that employers like to cover their
backs by getting OH to state that the individual is "fit" to attend a
meeting that could ultimately lead to getting the sack. And then in the
subsequent ET its all our fault for exacerbating the "illness". The GP
is in a difficult position as all they have is the individuals account
of whatever the issues are to go on. All the previous comments are
extremely valid - however when someone is absent and having no
specific treatment for their "condition I tend to use standard phrases
in my reports that places the responsibility of deciding whether the
individual attends or not with the individual and the employer. At the
end of the day the employer can choose how to progress the disciplinary
dependant on their policy.

No
You are an OH professional and if it is your opinion following review of
the patient and these guiding questions that they are fit to attend such
a meeting then you can advise accordingly. If you felt you needed
further evidence in order to answer the questions then you could either
discuss the case with your OHP or discuss with or write to the GP for
further information.
As an OH professional it is your opinion that you should be giving not a
GP's but you can base your opinion on information garnered from other
sources such as their GP. You may wish to say that GP states not fit but
you disagree for instance.

Peter,
Does this mean that when asked this question in the referral that the
correct procedure is to write to GP to ask their advice?!

Mark/Rita
The particular guidnace comes from the Health and Work Handbook, whic I
amsure you know is the
collaborative document for primary carers and OH professionals, link
below
bottom of page.20. At no
stage does it refer to a clinician/physician making this decision.

Hope this helps.

I use those criteria and in the case of depression in particular I
believe
that the decision should be taken by a clinician with some experience of
seeing and treating patients with it
