Hello
I am the editor of Occupational Health. I am very interested to know
where you all read the article by Dr Richard Preece as it appears in the
April issue of the journal which hasn't been published yet. I assume
that you have read the piece online. The news and comment pieces are
published on the internet immediately and longer articles a few months
later. Would love to know how you've found it but very pleased that you
have.
Re the topic, I would love to have some letters and comment on this
issue about the evidence base, research by nurses and so on. Although we
ask people to submit articles in every issue, very few are ever sent to
us.
We've done quite a bit in news about the practicality of using research
and following evidence based guidelines and I would welcome more
involvement from OH nurses in this in the pages of the journal. I
acknowledge that most of you are extremely busy but in a way that's the
key challenge - how busy practitioners can follow good practice in the
real world. I don't know the answer to that but you might so I'd welcome
your opinion.
Jiscmail is a lively and popular forum but it would be good if you
shared your views with a wider range of your professional peers which
you can do by writing letters, columns and indeed papers for the journal
and - as this Jismail thread demonstrates - reach other people online.
We have a simple informal peer review process and we're not completely
up ourselves so what's stopping you?
As Mrs Merton used to say 'Let's have a heated debate'.

I had something very similar and, like you say, they wanted me to change
so much I gave up and decided it wasn't worth the hassle!

I once submitted an article to a peer reviewed journal. I don't know who
reviewed it but it came back with a number of suggested alterations,
most of which were technically incorrect, even to getting the name of
the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 wrong! When I refused to
modify my article to make it incorrect, and to largely invalidate the
data and the conclusions, the journal then declined to publish it. Is it
surprising that I haven't really bothered since then?
Chris
