Dear John,
Proceedings of Somerset Archaeology Society Vol 142 p 271 dated 1999 has an
article by John Schofield, Chris Webster and MJ Anderson entitled " Second
World War Remains on Black Down: a Reinterpretation" on the major decoy
complex on the Mendip Hills protecting Bristol. The paper uses information
from archives, recollections of those involved with the site and includes a
detailed description of what survived in 1999.
Regards
David

Dear John,
I would concur with David Hunt's recommendation of Colin Dobinson's book and
report, these two documents are very well researched and not only contain
good gazetteers, they also contain very thorough and lengthy referenced
lists of documents held at the National Archives, Kew. In addition, Allan
Adams' illustrations of various types of fire displays in 'Fields of
Deception' are very clear and easily understood. One other source that gives
a brief but interesting introduction to the subject is 'The Blitz Then and
Now, Volume 1, pages 223 - 229, ISBN 0 900913 45 2.
I am familiar with the remains of a number of bombing decoys up and down the
country, and I am currently working on a group of decoys at Langstone
Harbour at the moment. Incidentally, the fire-break ditches survive at a
number of SF locations, Sneaton Moor (SF10(e)), Fulford York (SF71(a), and
Hameldon Hill (SF35(e)), to name but a few. Should you have any specific
enquires do feel free to contact me.

Subject: Starfish (SF) Decoys
Can anyone advise me where to find published works about WW2 Starfish (SF)
bombing decoys. In particular I am looking for information about what
equipment would be placed within the landscape.
Also, am I correct in assuming that all that generally survives of these
installations in the control bunker ?
Any help would be appreciated.
