When I set up Google maps for Bolton Museum and Archive Service I used
Google's Local Business Center.
The advantage here is you can directly edit the content that appears
with your map marker (opening times, charges, web site links or even add
photographs) but crucially Google verifies your listings via phone or
email.
There were a number of unofficial entries for our services when I first
used this approach but they now seem to have vanished from the search
listings (or at least are treated as less relevant).
My intervention may or may not have had an influence on this but I would
guess it had some clout with Google as the "official" maps now feature
prominently in most of their searches for Bolton Museums and related
services.
The only problem I can see is if someone has got there before you - the
verification process is automated and doesn't ask for any proof that you
are linked to your service as such (I set these up via my own Google
account too).
It is unclear what you can do if someone is cyber-squatting your map
entry for instance.

Subject: Further to Problem with Google Earth
Thanks to Frankie, Jon and James from Adele (who is joining the MCG -
its in progress! - Kathy) Further to this she says:
I was performing a 'Find Businesses' search for Bosworth Battlefield
that resulted in the numerous incorrect results. The 'Fly to' only
brings back two results, one is correct, the other is not... I also
wonder where the 'fly to' option sources it's data from? It produces the
same results as a Google Map Search, so in theory I might be able to
move the marker on the Google website - although deleting it would be
more appropriate as this just duplicated the correct entry! Sadly, we
are not given the option to delete. *sigh* I can do basic Wiki editing
so thank you James for this pointer, extremely useful. With a bit of
fiddling I might at least get a Wiki symbol to appear in the correct
place!
Another thought is to investigate the 'Places of Interest' layer for our
museums. I noticed that some other museums are listed as 'Tourist Spots'
on the Enjoy England website which in turn displays them on Google Earth
with the pink camera symbol.
I'm also really interested in the call for a centralised listing of core
data that Jon talked about, so I will be keeping my eye out for
developments of this type! It could have saved me a lot of time!
Thank you all again for your input and ideas!
Adele
