Hi Julian.
Just thought I'd check if you'd come across the JISC INSPECT project
along the way (quite possibly, given who you have been talking to). It's
working with the idea of "significant properties", which is a sensible
way to approach preservation by asking first, "what is important about
this thing I'm considering preserving?". Various INSPECT sub-projects
take the significant properties concept and examine how it works with
different types of media or asset. Overlapping ideas, applied in the
realm of digital art and other "variable media", can be found in the
Variable Media Network's approach, well worth checking out (look up Jon
Ippolito and Richard Rinehart). All a bit academic, perhaps, for the
context you're addressing, but still the sort of thing that can be
resolved down to practical ways of assessing what you've got and
planning your approach to preservation.
Cheers, Jeremy

Subject: [MCG] Preservation and curation of digital assets - request for
case studies
I am undertaking research, for Renaissance East Midlands, to provide
guidance for small to medium size museums in the preservation and
curation of digital assets. This will draw on existing guidance from
Collections Link, Digital Preservation Coalition, JISC Digital Media
(formerly TASI), and UKOLN, amongst others. The guidance will be
published in an easy-to-read format on the REM website, and we hope the
Collections Link website.
The recommendations focus on digital assets in the form of image, audio
and video documents, but will refer briefly to issues relating to the
preservation and curation of web sites.
As part of this guidance, I would like to include some case studies to
illustrate good practice. This may of course include lessons learned!
If members of the group are willing to share their experiences, I would
be very pleased to hear from them off list.
With thanks
Julian Tomlin
