I've found Google Webmaster tools (http://tinyurl.com/2rywwa) really useful
for tuning up my site http://machineculture.wordpress.com too. I'd recommend
it to anyone who is setting up a site. Submitting site maps is pretty
simple, and you can monitor all sorts of other stuff too.

That's a really good point. We don't publish our KML file in a google
sitemap but we do link to it from the Google Map on our 'how to get here'
pages, so I guess Google must find it via that.
We do use Google Sitemaps to publish our collections to Google, one URL per
object. This has the advantage that we can log in to Google Webmaster tools
and use the sitemaps section to monitor how well our online catalogues are
indexed by google. Currently around 74,000 of 140,000 URLs.
