This is a drawback of OpenSearch vs. building a centralised index - you aren't using a centralised search engine, just submitting your query to 9 different search engines and aggregating the results. So you're limited by the query parsing abilities of those 9 different searches, I suppose.
I'd also guess that's why the results list links back to the originating site. The new window thing on 'view large image' has been annoying me too.
