Dear colleagues,
With just under three weeks until IBRU's 20th anniversary conference "The State of Sovereignty", there is still time for you to join more than 200 scholars, diplomats and boundary practitioners from around the world at this landmark event to explore on the impact of the geopolitical upheavals of the last twenty years and to exchange ideas about the meaning and function of sovereignty and international boundaries today and in the decades ahead. However, you will need to act quickly as we are now close to capacity.
The conference has attracted more than 90 speakers from 30 countries, including quite a few distinguished members of the int-boundaries list. Between them they will lead 26 sessions over three days exploring a diverse range of themes - from 'failing' states to disputed maritime space to cartographies of sovereignty - and regional issues from the Arctic to the Middle East to Western Sahara. The issue of the 'territorialisation' of the EEZ which has provoked much discussion on this list in recent days, will also be addressed in a session on regimes for managing maritime space. Full details of the conference programme (including paper abstracts) can be found on the conference website at www.dur.ac.uk/ibru/conferences/sos.
The gala dinner on 2 April has already sold out but a few places remain available for the rest of the conference. The fee for 'conference only' places is £450 for full-time academics and researchers, and £750 for representatives of governments and commercial organisations; the fee includes three nights' accommodation, dinner on 31 March and 1 April, and breakfasts and lunches throughout the conference. The easiest way to book a place is to use the online booking form at www.dur.ac.uk/ibru/conferences/sos/booking, but bookings can also be made by telephone (+44 191 334 1961) and email ([log in to unmask]). Due to the limited number of places available, we recommend that you book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
The attached list of organisations represented demonstrates the rich diversity of participation in the conference, and it promises to be a most enjoyable and stimulating three days. I hope that you will be able to join us.
Best wishes,
m a r t i n
