As a rider to Kathy's posting the petition I'd add that I have now written twice to Wirral Council on this matter, both in my capacity as IAML(UK & Irl) General Secretary and as someone who grew up on the Wirral and was a regular user of Birkenhead Central Library, not least its music section. My first letter, asking for information on the future of Wirral's music collections and seeking reassurance that they would still be available to the public (whose council tax is after all funding them), met with a standard reply which failed to address my questions. I have since then contacted Wirral Council, posing the same questions, but have not yet received any response. I have been advised too to contact Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead, if Wirral continues to be non-committal.
Anyone interested in seeing the correspondence is welcome to contact me off-list.

Subject: [IAML-UK-IRL] Irby and Wirral Libraries campaign petition
Dear list members,
You may have read in the national press and Private Eye about the
decision by Wirral Council to close 11 of its libraries. More detail
can be found here
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/WirralCulture/?signed=e195ee4.cb5adc
along with a petition; please sign if you feel moved to do so.
(I think this is a worthy cause, and hope AG doesn't think it's an
inappropriate use of the list!).
