I totally agree with David that there is no need for all data to be on
one database. Surely a major point about HERs is that they are holistic
rather than monolithic like SMRs were.

Subject: Re: Proposal for UKDFD data transfer
I would just like to say on behalf of the UKDFD a big thanks to all that
have helped, it has been incredibly helpful. The offlist comments and
offers of advice will help to move the concept forward. The robust
debate
was interesting and useful. It indeed highlighted many issues with data
and
data transfer.
One note of interest would be whether data has to be uploaded and
integrated.. where the possibility of data share (where data is updated
on
the host site - allowing for recipients to have access to continualy
up-to-date info. ) When I was DC archaeologist, I used several data
sources not linked to the SMR.. such as Google maps, flashearth, old
maps,
National Libraries of Scotland Maps etc.. all helping to make
decisions.
Anyway, was just asked by the UKDFD to say that they appreciate all the
help, and will be working to move the process forward in a way to
minimise
work for pressed HERs.
