capital, one lowercase, one number, and no double characters (actually its
slightly different but that will do it.)
Your local IT support can reset you if locked out, then you have to first
log in by browser and immediately chose a new PW.
IMPAP.NHS.NET and SEND.NHS.NET are correct and working
SMTP needs authentication, use same settings as incoming mail server.

Subject: Re: NHS.net mail migration
Anyone succeeded in getting a standard email client like Thunderbird
working after migration? I realise this may not be possible at home but
we use this within the surgery within the NHS network.
Pinging imap.nhs.net timed out perpetually today and I couldn't get my
password accepted for this or send.nhs.net.
