Seminar 1 - Activism, Volunteering and Citizenship: Mapping the Themes
(Northumbria University) Confirmed speakers:
Professor Michael Goldman, University of Minnesota Dr David
Featherstone, University of Glasgow Dr Pablo Regalsky, CENDA, Bolivia
Judith Brodie, Director of Voluntary Service Overseas
This opening seminar in the series will introduce the interdisciplinary,
cross-cutting themes of the series. Cutting across academic, practice
and activist divides, the four speakers will provide thought-provoking
interventions around the broad areas of activism, volunteering and
citizenship in a variety of international contexts, engaging with the
concept of 'emerging' and 'abandoned' citizens and highlighting how
forms of activism, volunteering and citizenship are ruled in and out by
the shifting global and local dynamics of neoliberalism, mediated
through the experiences of different social actors in diverse local,
national and global contexts.
The seminar will take place over two days (the afternoon of 18th May and
the morning of the 19th) with dinner and accommodation provided for all
participants.
Subsequent seminars are scheduled as follows:
October 2009 - Faith and Activism (Newcastle University) December 2009 -
Processes of Professionalisation (Northumbria University) Jan 2010 -
Biographies of Activism and Social Change (Newcastle University) March
2010 - Synthesis and Links to Policy and Practice (Edinburgh University)
