EDINBURGH SOCIAL POLICY GROUP SEEKING NEW COLLEAGUE

We are seeking an outstanding researcher/teacher to join the Social Policy
subject area of the School of Social Political Science in the College of
Humanities and Social Science.
The post is available from 1 August 2009 and is part of the strategic plan
to develop the subject area in response to anticipated retirements within
it.  We seek a colleague with a developed career who can take a prominent
role within the group; the appointment may be made at either grade 8
(lecturer) or grade 9 (senior lectureship).
The appointee will be expected to engage actively in research, teaching and
administration and play a full part in the collegiate life of the Social
Policy subject area and the School of Social and Political Science.
Applicants are expected to have a relevant doctoral degree, and to have
demonstrable achievements in research, publication, and teaching. We
particularly seek expertise in quantitative methodological skills.
Applicants should be able to relate to the group's overall comparative
(cross-national) perspective and to advance theoretical and substantive
interests within one or more of its three research groups:  Children,
Families and Welfare (including household studies); State, Governance and
Welfare (including socio-legal studies and national and international
criminal justice); and Work, Economy and Welfare (including political
economy and resource allocation issues). The appointee would be expected to
be a credible applicant for research projects involving the analysis of
quantitative data, to supervise PhD candidates with quantitative research
topics, and to become involved in graduate training of quantitative research
skills.
It is intended that appointment will be made at the appropriate point on the
Senior Lecturer / Reader Grade UE09 scale (£46,278-£52,086).  Depending on
the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate an appointment
on the Lecturer UE08 scale (£36,532-£43,622) may be offered.  Where it is
possible to be certain, in advance of interview, that a shortlisted
candidate could not be made an offer above UE08, that will be clarified to
the candidate at the point of invitation.
