Religion and Society in Central Eurasia: New Sources for the Religious History of Kazakhstan
Venice, Italy
October 29-30, 2009
Submission deadline: April 15, 2009
The Institute for Research in Social and Religious History (Vicenza, Italy) is pleased to announce the organization of a workshop to be held in Venice on the religious history of the Kazakh steppe between the 15th and the early 20th century. The goal of this workshop is to explore new directions for the study of the religious history of Central Eurasia. Accordingly we intend to bring together a number of scholars to examine new archival and manuscript sources, starting from the formation of the Kazakh khanates until the Stalinist "revolution from above".
As we aim to highlight the specific features of the religious past of the Kazakh region, we welcome papers on any topic related to religious history, especially those addressing relevant issues for the Kazakh steppe and the surrounding areas. Scholars with a research interest in Kazakhstan, Xinjiang, Russia, and Central Asia will be expected to discuss the cultural and social relations between the regions both separated and united by the Kazakh steppe.
We are especially interested in the following topics:
- Religious institutions from the 15th century to the early 20th century;
- Interconfessional dynamics from the 18th century to the early 20th century.
- Tsarist and early Soviet institutions administering religious communities.
Although much attention will be devoted to Islam, we encourage specialists on Orthodoxy (both mainstream and sectarian), other Christian confessions, Judaism and Buddhism to propose papers to be presented at the conference.
Scholars from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan will take part in the event. They will present the results of their decade-long effort which has resulted in the publishing of a multi-volume edition of sources for Kazakh history, and describe the sources concerning religion included in the work.
