The Disability and Rehabilitation Team within the Department of Violence
and Injury Prevention and Disability at the World Health Organization is
in the process of recruiting a P2 Technical Officer. The main duties of
the position are:
- compiling evidence of success in rehabilitation
- preparation of normative guidelines and related materials on
disability and rehabilitation
- supporting Member States with implementation of rehabilitation
programmes
- supporting the development of the World report on disability and
rehabilitation

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The Department's objective is to spearhead global action to address
disability and to prevent violence and injury using advocacy, data
collection, training, monitoring evaluation and dissemination of best
practices.
The aims of the Disability and Rehabilitation Team (DAR) are to:
(1) Promote strategies to improve living conditions and equalizations of
opportunities for persons with disabilities;
(2) Support policy development in disability and rehabilitation;
(3) Strengthen rehabilitation services; and
(4) Integrate rehabilitation into primary health care through CBR
services.
Description of duties:
Under the supervision of Coordinator DAR, the incumbent will serve as a
member of the DAR team and will work with experts and specialists on the
team to:
- Compile evidence on the magnitude, consequences and prevention of
disability and on what works in rehabilitation.
- Participate in the preparation of normative guidelines and related
materials on disability and rehabilitation in collaboration with other
UN organizations/Specialized Agencies/International Non-governmental
Organizations and Disabled People's Organizations.
- Support Member States with initiating and enhancing rehabilitation
programmes.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
To support the Coordinator in the development of the World Report on
Disability and Rehabilitation and related documentation and support
their use to upscale country level action:
- Identify case studies to ensure "lived experience of persons
with disabilities" included in the report;
- Write technical briefing papers, fact sheets;
- Analyse the broad range of health and disability related topics,
seeking out and identifying the critical areas for policy and practice;
- Carry out literature reviews where gaps in information are
identified;
- Finalize a glossary on disability;
- Oversee the development of the statistical annexe;
- Organize the peer review of the report;
- Integrate feedback from the peer review in consultation with the
EC;
- Undertake reference checking;
- Finalize contributors lists, prefaces, the development of
boxes, etc.
- Facilitate production of the report in alternate formats;
- Write WEB news items, prepare power point presentations for
the website;
- Follow up launch and support implementation
Education:
Essential: University degree in medicine, allied health, public health,
health law, disability, rehabilitation, social science or other related
health disciplines.
Desirable: Postgraduate degree in one of the above areas.
Skills:
- Good organizational and coordination skills,
- Strong analytical and writing skills to prepare a variety of
documents, guidelines and briefing materials
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work within and contribute to a team.
- Sound knowledge on health and disability
- Persons with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Experience:
Essential: Minimum 2 years experience in the field of health or
disability.
Desirable
- Preparation of technical papers, e.g. reports, guidelines
Languages required (indicating whether for reading/writing/speaking)
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English, a working knowledge
of another UN language would be an advantage.
